Senior CAD Designer

Location: London or Brockenhurst
Reporting to: Technical Director

Main Purpose of the Job


To design, as part of a growing and ambitious Engineering team, Anemoi’s wind-assisted ship propulsion technology.

We are looking for an exceptional CAD Designer to work within our multidisciplinary Engineering team to deliver designs for marine equipment and integration of that equipment onto ships. The CAD Designer should be comfortable with working with a young and dynamic team whilst taking the lead providing expert advice as a specialist in their field.

To be successful, the CAD Designer will be someone that stays up-to-date with new software and advancements to support with generating designs for complex projects. The right person will demonstrate a systematic approach with impeccable attention to detail and have sound knowledge of naval architecture, mechanical and structural drafting within the marine (commercial shipping) industry.

There may be occasions where travel is required, mainly between Anemoi’s UK Offices.


Main Duties and Responsibilities


  • 3D modelling of Anemoi wind-assisted propulsion equipment and layouts of that equipment on ships
  • Producing clear, unambiguous, accurate 2D drawings for reliable and economic manufacture by shipyards and fabricators worldwide
  • Producing views of 3D models to demonstrate practicality and ergonomics of designs and to highlight any clashes or issues
  • Generating and checking Bills of Materials (BoMs)
  • Performing calculations for tolerance stackups, materials usage and weight estimates
  • Setting up and maintaining the systems needed for efficient management of complex 3D assemblies, associated 2D drawings and BoMs, including revision control and distribution of updated documents to relevant stakeholders
  • Ensuring final designs are practical to manufacture, assemble, commission and use as well as compliant with classification society requirements and shipbuilding regulations
  • Communicating with naval architects and engineers, and incorporating knowledge gained into future designs
  • Identifying and communicating potential design problems to the rest of the Engineering team, along with practical solutions
  • Checking drawings and models from clients, colleagues and subcontractors, including clash checking
  • Providing guidance and mentoring on CAD design best practice to colleagues in the Anemoi Engineering team


Person Specification


Education / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training in a technical discipline e.g. engineering or naval architecture


Knowledge and Experience

  • Must have 10+ years of experience as a CAD designer or draftsman in the marine industry, using 2D and 3D computer-aided design and drafting software e.g. Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, Navisworks, AutoCAD, Rhino
  • Knowledge of CAD best practice including drawing standards and automation of routine CAD procedures
  • Experience of using CAD file management systems such as Autodesk Vault
  • Knowledge of shipbuilding best practice, typical details, weld specifications, tolerances, materials and manufacturing techniques
  • Ability to apply appropriate tolerances and check the effect of tolerance stack-ups
  • Ability to sketch clearly by hand is advantageous but not essential
  • Experience of working with Classification Societies and applying their rules and regulations for designs would be advantageous
  • Experience of the commercial shipping industry would be advantageous
  • Experience of drawing hydraulic and electrical schematics and 3D routing would be advantageous
  • Experience of working with 3D scans would be advantageous
