At Anemoi, quality is built into every Rotor Sail from the outset. From initial design and engineering analysis to full-scale prototype testing, material validation and manufacturing, each stage is focused on delivering consistent performance, reliability and durability.
Full-scale testing validates critical systems under demanding conditions, while material testing helps demonstrate long-term durability. Close collaboration between engineering and production, together with Anemoi’s patented composite manufacturing process, helps maintain consistent quality as production scales, providing confidence that every Rotor Sail will perform as intended throughout its operational life.
Designing and testing for reliability
Quality starts long before a Rotor Sail is manufactured.
Every new product begins with a clear understanding of the operational requirements it must meet, from vessel type and installation constraints to maintenance access and long-term performance expectations. Defining the functional design requirements at the outset means that critical-to-quality features are captured in the design. Material and coatings selection for the harsh marine environment is a good example: Anemoi uses high quality 3-layer epoxy marine paint systems over class-approved steel plate for the main structural elements while A4 stainless steel fasteners resist corrosion in exposed locations. Quality brands like Siemens, ABB and SKF are used for key electrical system components, bearings and seals.
Alongside detailed engineering analysis, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), physical testing plays a critical role in validating designs and confirming performance in real-world conditions.
For Anemoi’s 3.5-metre Rotor Sail, testing was an integral part of the development process. Full-scale prototypes were built to evaluate critical systems before commercial production, allowing engineers to test performance, identify improvements and refine designs before deployment. This iterative approach of designing, testing and refining helps ensure quality is built into every Rotor Sail from the outset. The same rigorous approach applies to our 5-metre Rotor Sails and all of our deployment systems, with each product undergoing engineering analysis, validation and testing as part of its development.
Proving performance through testing
Testing provides the evidence needed to demonstrate that systems are not only functional, but capable of operating reliably throughout their service life.
As part of the 3.5-metre Rotor Sail development programme, Anemoi built and tested full-scale prototypes of the drive system inside the Rotor Sail, the rail deployment trolley system and the folding deployment system.
The rail system, which enables Rotor Sails to be moved along the deck when cargo operations require clear access, was tested under loading conditions beyond those expected in normal service. These tests were used to verify safe operation, validate system performance and identify opportunities for further improvement.
The folding deployment system has also undergone extensive durability testing. To date, the system has completed more than 600 folding cycles, helping engineers assess long-term performance and build confidence in its operational reliability. Testing programmes such as these allow components and systems to be evaluated beyond their expected operating conditions, providing valuable insight into durability, reliability and safety margins.
In addition, materials used within the Rotor Sail structure undergo testing to demonstrate their suitability for long-term marine operations. Composite laminates, for example, have been fatigue tested to help validate their ability to meet the intended design life of the product.
Delivering consistent quality at scale
Developing a successful prototype is only part of the challenge. The same standards must be maintained as production scales and products are delivered across a growing fleet of vessels.
To achieve this, manufacturing considerations are incorporated from the earliest stages of development, with close collaboration between engineering and production teams throughout the design process. Knowledge gained during prototyping and testing is shared directly with manufacturing teams, helping ensure that the quality demonstrated during development is replicated in production.
Anemoi’s patented composite manufacturing process also plays an important role in supporting quality and consistency across the product range. By improving repeatability and reducing variation during production, the process helps ensure Rotor Sails are manufactured to the same high standard while maintaining the structural performance required for long-term operation at sea.
Quality is also verified before equipment leaves Anemoi’s facilities. Rotor Sails are assembled and tested at full operating speed prior to delivery, allowing their performance to be validated before they reach the vessel. Anemoi’s delivery approach provides an additional level of quality assurance prior to installation, with the assembled equipment fully tested before it is delivered to the shipyard.
Why quality matters
For shipowners, quality is ultimately measured by performance in service.
Reliable systems reduce maintenance requirements, minimise operational disruption and support lower operating expenditure throughout a vessel’s lifetime. Consistent manufacturing standards also help ensure predictable performance across fleets, providing confidence that every Rotor Sail will operate as intended throughout its operational life.
From prototype testing and system validation to manufacturing innovation and continuous improvement, quality underpins every stage of the Rotor Sail development process. By combining rigorous testing with proven production methods, Anemoi works to deliver Rotor Sail systems that provide dependable performance, long-term reliability and value across their full-service life.
