NSU Tubarao

NS United Kaiun Kaisha’s NSU Tubarao, a 400,000 DWT VLOC, was successfully installed with five 5×35m Folding Rotor Sails from Anemoi Marine Technologies Ltd (“Anemoi”) in October 2025.

Overview

  • 400,000 DWT, VLOC
  • Installation Yard: Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard
  • Class: Class NK
  • Client: NS United Kaiun Kaisha
  • Charterer: Vale
  • Delivered in October 2025

Approach

  • 5 Rotor Sails (5m x 35m) were installed
  • The Rotor Sails were installed on Anemoi’s bespoke folding deployment system, whereby the sails can be folded from the vertical to mitigate impact on air draught and cargo handling operations when in port.
  • Mobilisation of global supply chain and full stakeholder engagement, including management of the Class approval process
  • Rotor sails were successfully installed using a lift-and-shift method from barge to yard, marking the first use of yard gantry cranes and resulting in a faster installation process.
  • All Rotor Sails are automated and controlled from the Bridge Control Unit (BCU)
  • Annual reduction in fuel consumption and emissions is expected to be around 6-12%
At NSU we aim to support our stakeholders with the world’s most efficient ships. The Rotor Sails on NSU TUBARAO, and the advanced systems that will help maximise its fuel-saving potential, are a perfect example of those efforts. We are pleased to have completed this successful installation, within the scheduled drydock, by strong collaboration of both Anemoi and the NSU team.
